Smoke alarms can be either Hardwired (with a battery back-up), or Battery Operated. A tenant is responsible for replacing any flat or nearly flat batteries in hardwired alarms ONLY and should never attempt to change a battery on a Battery Operated alarm.
- Smoke alarms will indicate they have a low backup battery by making a “beep” or “chirping” sound about once a minute.
- Only the device with the low battery will chirp, the other interconnected alarms should be silent.
- The battery should be changed as soon as possible as a flat battery will mean you have no back-up warning system if there is a power outage.
- If you wish to replace the battery later, press the test/hush button to snooze the low battery beep for 10 hrs.
HOW TO REPLACE THE BACKUP BATTERY
- Press the button on the side of the unit and the unit will open and reveal the battery.
- Remove the existing battery and replace with a battery of the same type.
- Close the alarm. Please note that the alarm will not close or operate if there is no battery present
A tenant must not remove a smoke alarm, remove the battery (other than to replace it) or do anything to reduce the effectiveness of the alarm.
If the alarm continues to beep after you have replaced the battery, please contact the property's nominated smoke alarm company
